DOWNIEVILLE, SIERRA COUNTY — November 7, 2026. Highway 49 reopened in both directions Thursday afternoon after an excavator fell from a trailer east of Downieville, temporarily blocking traffic during the equipment recovery.
What happened
According to the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office, the agency learned about the incident at approximately 2 p.m. on November 5. An excavator slipped off a lowboy trailer traveling southbound, roughly three miles east of town. Caltrans closed the highway north of its yard to give the truck driver room to reload the machinery safely.
Road restored
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the roadway was open again by 4 p.m. Thursday. This is a report about a completed road closure, not a warning that Highway 49 remains closed on November 7. The public account did not establish an injury or explain why the equipment came off the trailer.
Travel information
Mountain highways can experience temporary restrictions for crashes, equipment recovery, storms and road repairs. Motorists traveling through Downieville should check Caltrans QuickMap for current conditions before departure, especially when towing trailers or operating large vehicles.
